Africa, spanning approximately 30.37 million ㎢ and covering more than 20% of the Earth's total surface area, is the second 'largest continent' of the world. However, there is not only nature but also 1.5 billion people from 54 countries. Most are in their twenties, making Africa the 'young continent'. Today, this young Africa is rapidly growing. Six of the 10 fastest-growing nations are in Africa, with Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa as the centers of digital innovation and Egypt and Morocco as the new industrial hubs. African fashion, music, and film industries are also receiving worldwide attention. Today's ever-changing and growing Africa is similar to Korea, which also achieved significant and rapid development in past decades. In fact, Korea and Africa already share a close bond from the past. During the 1950s, Korea fell into the chaos of the Korean War. In response, Ethiopia sent royal guards, South Africa aided air forces, and Egypt and Liberia provided supplies. One pivotal value of Africa was behind this willing support toward a distant country. That value is the 'Ubuntu' philosophy. 'Ubuntu' is an African philosophy that emphasizes the value of community based on the phrase 'I am because you are.' Under the practice of Ubuntu, African countries acknowledged Korea as their neighbor and a part of the community. Today, 21st-century Korean youths are reaching out to the world more than ever. We will meet many opportunities along the way to understand and connect deeply with Africa. We will learn and grow together to create a better global society.
