태권도는 대한민국의 대표적인 무예이자 세계적인 스포츠입니다. 오 천년의 역사를 지닌 대한민국은 예로부터 신체를 단련하는 여러 무예가 있었습니다. 태권도는 이러한 한국의 전통무예를 근대화한 것으로 2000년도에 올림픽 정식 종목으로 채택되었으며, 오늘날에는 8천만 명 의 세계인이 함께 하는 세계적인 스포츠가 되었습니다.
태권도는 아무런 무기 없이 맨손과 맨발을 이용해 공격과 방어를 합니다. 무예로써 태권도의 가장 큰 특징은 발차기 기술입니다. 태권도는 매우 빠르고 위력적인 다양한 발차기가 있습니다. 이 태권도의 발차기는 이미 영화 등을 통해 많이 소개되어 우리에게 친숙합니다. 태권도의 수련 방법은 품새, 겨루기, 격파 등이 있습니다. 품새는 태권도의 공격과 방어 기술을 한정된 범위 안에서 체계적으로 연결해 놓은 동작으로, 수련자는 쉬운 동작에서 어려운 동작으로 점진적으로 수련해 나갑니다. 겨루기는 품새를 통해 익힌 공격과 방어기술을 응용하여 실제로 상대와 대결하며 태권도를 수련하는 방법입니다. 올림픽 태권도는 태권도의 겨루기를 다투는 경기입니다. 격파는 수련자가 태권도를 통해 연마한 힘과 기술을 단단한 물체를 쳐서 깨뜨리며 시험하는 수련 방법입니다. 한국의 전통문화 속에서 형성된 태권도에는 한국적이고 동양적인 사상이 담겨있습니다. 태권도 수련에서 신체적인 단련뿐 아니라 정신적인 수련을 강조하고, 예의를 중요하게 여기는 것은 모두 이러한 이유 때문입니다.
세계인들은 언어와 인종, 역사와 문화를 넘어 태권도를 통해 하나가 됩니다. 태권도가 이렇게 세계화된 바탕에는 태권도를 사랑하고 태권도를 세계인들과 나누어 온 한국인들이 있습니다. 1960년대부터 세계로 진출하며 태권도를 전파해온 태권도 사범들 그리고 현재 세계 각지로 태권도평화봉사를 떠나는 한국의 청년들이 그 주인공입니다. 세계의 친구 여러분 이런 한국인들과 친구가 되지 않으실래요? 태권도의 나라 대한민국의 친구가 되어보세요!

Taekwondo, Korean Martial Art for Everyone around the World
Become Friends with Korea, the country of Taekwondo!
Taekwondo is a popular Korean martial art and a global sport. Over the course of its 5000 years of history, Korea has developed many different forms of martial arts. Taekwondo is a modernized version of a Korean traditional martial art. It became an Olympic sport in 2000. Now, it is a global sport that is practiced by 80 million people around the world.
In Taekwondo, practitioners attack and defend with their bare hands and feet, not using weapons. A defining characteristic of Taekwondo as a martial art is its kicking technique. Taekwondo uses different kinds of very fast and powerful kicks. Many people are familiar with Taekwondo kicks because they are often featured in movies. Taekwondo training includes Poomsae (a set of forms), sparring, and breaking. Poomsae is systematic sets of movements that combine attack and defense techniques. Its level of difficulty gradually increases. Sparring is a training method in which practitioners practice their attack and defense techniques by fighting with an opponent. Olympic Taekwondo is competition sparring. Breaking is a training method in which practitioners use their power and techniques to break hard objects. As a Korean traditional martial art, Taekwondo reflects a Korean traditional philosophy. For this reason, Taekwondo training emphasizes both physical and mental training and respect for opponents.
Through Taekwondo, people around the world become one across cultures, ethnicities, history and culture. The globalization of Taekwondo is due to the promotion efforts of dedicated Korean Taekwondo practitioners. Since the 1960s, Korean Taekwondo practitioners have gone abroad to spread Taekwondo. Seogi (서기) Stance
Various postures of standing on one's feet in order to perform offensive and defensive techniques.
Makgi (막기) Blocking
A defensive technique used to protect vital parts of the defender’s body using the hands, arms, feet or legs.
Jireugi (지르기) Punching
An offensive technique used by striking with the fists.
Chigi (치기) Striking
All kinds of offensive techniques delivered using the hands, fists, fingertips, legs, or feet.
Jjireugi (찌르기) Thrusting
An offensive technique used to strike the opponent’s vital points with the fingertips
Chagi (차기) Kicking
An offensive technique used to strike the target with the feet by extending or swinging the legs
