Challenge: 도전 정신을 통해 역사를 만들어나갑니다. 한국은 일제강점기, 6.25 전쟁을 거쳐 온 나라가 폐허가 되었으며 1950년대 세계에서 가장 가난한 나라였습니다. 하지만 한국은 도전으로 상징되는 해양 문화를 적극적으로 수용해 바닷길을 넓혀 전 세계를 대상으로 무역을 추진하여 경제발전을 성취했습니다. 오늘날 기적과 같은 한국의 경제 번영은 바다를 향한 한국인의 도전 정신이 있었기에 가능했습니다. Eco-friendliness: 친환경 생태 구축에 국가적으로 앞장서고 있습니다. 지구촌은 지금 기후변화와 해양 오염이 빠르게 진행되고 있습니다. 바다 생물종은 감소하고 있으며 생태계 파괴는 인류 앞에 주어진 과제가 되었습니다. 삼면이 바다인 한국은 서해에는 연안습지 보전, 남해에는 도서 해양생태 보전, 동해에는 해양생태 보전을 통해 해양생물, 갯벌, 연안, 도서, 수중 등의 해양생태계를 건강하게 보전 관리해나갑니다. Ambition: 바다에서 시작된 한국인의 꿈, 해양문화대국 대한민국으로 이어집니다. 한국의 울산에는 7천 년 전에 바위에 새긴 고래 그림으로 세계적으로 유명한 반구대 암각화가 있습니다. BBC가 인류 고래잡이 역사의 시원이 한국의 반구대 암각화라고 소개할 만큼 한국은 선사시대부터 인류사적으로 해양문화 발전의 중심지였습니다. 바다에서 시작된 한국인의 꿈은 고조선, 고구려, 백제, 신라, 발해, 고려, 조선을 거쳐 성장 발전하고 있으며, 21세기 대한민국을 해양 문화 대국으로 나아가게 하고 있습니다. Networking: 전 세계 모든 나라를 연결하여 지구촌의 더 나은 미래를 만듭니다. 21세기 지구온난화로 북극항로길이 열리면서 북극항로의 중심지인 한국의 바다는 동북아시아와 유럽을 연결하는 중심이 되어가고 있습니다. 세상 모든 것을 연결하고 통합하는 바다처럼, 21세기 한국인도 바다를 품고 전 세계를 연결해 지구촌의 더 나은 미래를 창조해나갈 것입니다. 아시아의 중심, 동북아의 관문, 전 세계 모든 이들과 꿈과 우정을 나누는 나라 대한민국을 만들어나갈 것입니다.

Surrounded by the ocean on three sides, Korea is committed to preserving rich marine life by protecting the wetlands and mudflats along its western coast and the marine ecology along its eastern and southern coasts. -Ambition: Pursue the lasting ambition of leading a global maritime culture. The Korean southern city of Ulsan has worldfamous petroglyphs of whales from seven thousand years ago. Known as the Bangudae Petroglyphs, it was described as the first evidence of whale hunting in a BBC report.
