EnglishA card news series by VANK that explains, through old documents and maps, why Dokdo is Korean territory. Its ten cards cover four stories: old Korean records of Dokdo and Japanese maps that left it outside Japan's territory, Japan's 17th-century claim, An Yong-bok and the Ulleungdo Dispute, and the truth behind Japan's 1905 incorporation of Dokdo into Shimane Prefecture. The last card invites readers to join VANK in telling the world about Dokdo. This is the English version.

Do You Really Know Dokdo?
8 Stories to Remember for Dokdo
[2장] STORY 1 Dokdo, a Long Time Ago,
Korea recognized Dokdo as its own territory.
“The two islands of Usan(Dokdo) and Mureung(Ulleungdo) are located in the middle of the sea due east of the hyeon(Uljin county). The two islands are not far apart from each other and are visible on a clear day.” Sejong Sillok, Jiriji (1454)
On a clear day, Dokdo can be seen from Ulleungdo.
Before Ulleungdo was inhabited,
many old Korean documents
and maps record ‘Usando’ (Dokdo’s old name).
[3장] Japan did not recognize Dokdo as its own territory.
Kaisei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu (1779)
The Kaisei Nihon Yochi Rotei Zenzu shows Dokdo and Ulleungdo not colored and located outside latitude and longitude lines.
Dai Sangoku No Zu (1802)
The Dai Sangoku No Zu shows Dokdo and Ulleungdo in the same color as the Korean peninsula, depicting them as part of Korea.
[4장] STORY 2 17th Century Japan’s Claims
Japan gained sovereignty over Dokdo during the 17th century. FALSE!
Japan excluded Ulleungdo and Dokdo from its territory via documentation.

Inshū Shichō Gakki (1667)
[5장] Japan did not ban the passage to Dokdo because it is Japanese territory. FALSE!
Japan considered Dokdo as the ancillary of Ulleungdo.
Thus, the prohibition of all Japanese passage towards Ulleungdo also included Dokdo.
Matsushima (Dokdo) of Takeshima (Ulleungdo)
Letter from Shozaemon Kameyama to Kyuemon-Katsuzane Oya (1660)
[6장] STORY 3 An Yong-bok and Dokdo
In 1693, An Yong-bok and Park Eo-dun are kidnapped to Japan by Japanese fishermen who claimed they committed illegal fishery.
This incident triggers the dispute regarding the sovereignty of Ulleungdo (the Ulleungdo Dispute).
Japan confirms that Ulleungdo and Dokdo do not belong to Japanese territory.
[The Edo Shogunate] Since when has Takeshima (Ulleungdo) been under the jurisdiction of Tottori prefecture? Apart from Takeshima (Ulleungdo), are there any other islands that belong to the states?
[The Tottori-han’s Submission] Takeshima (Ulleungdo) is not an island that belongs to Inaba and Hoki (today’s Tottori prefecture). As for Takeshima (Ulleungdo) and Matsushima [Dokdo], neither belongs to the two states nor are there any other islands belonging to these two states.
[7장] In 1696, An Yong-bok chases away Japanese fishing ships that intruded Ulleungdo.
He travels to Japan to testify that Ulleungdo and Dokdo are Korean territories.
(문서 이미지 속 설명) Regarding Takeshima (Ulleungdo) and one other island (Dokdo), bear in mind that Japan has nothing to do with them. Dajōkan Order of 1877
The story of An Yong-bok appears in the documents of both countries including the ‘Sukjong Sillok’ and ‘Genroku Kyu Heishinen Chosenbune Chakugan Ikkan No Oboegaki’.
In 1877, Dajōkan, the highest government organ of 19th century Japan, reconfirms that Ulleungdo and Dokdo are not Japanese territories.
[8장] STORY 4 The Truth of 1905 Shimane Prefecture Incorporation
During the 1905 Russo-Japanese War, Japan forcefully incorporated Dokdo into its territory as a military base.
[Japan in the Past] Dokdo has no owner so it is now Japanese territory!
[Japan Today] Japan already owned Dokdo?
However, today’s Japanese government inconsistently claims that Japan incorporated Dokdo because they already owned the island.
[9장] There is a greater problem with Japan’s claim.
The incorporation into Shimane prefecture occurred during the Imperialistic war, making it an invasion of territory.
(지도 표기) Ulleungdo / Dokdo / Shimane
Japan’s claim is an attempt to justify war crimes of Imperialism, and a shameful act that denies any responsibility or guilt.
To live as a global society, we must face past conflicts and advance together to a harmonizing future.
Therefore, we cannot accept the claim of Japanese sovereignty over Dokdo.
