EnglishErnest Bethell (1872-1909) was a British journalist who founded the Daehan Maeil Sinbo newspaper in 1904 with Yang Gi-tak, informing people in Korea and abroad about Japanese imperialist aggression and Korean resistance. His last words were, "Even if I die, let the newspaper live forever to save the Korean people." Park Eun-sik mourned his death, writing, "May his fine name remain and shine forever." George Lewis Shaw (1880-1943), an Irish-British businessman, allowed the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea to set up a transportation office within his company, Yilyungyanghaeng, and helped independence activists travel safely. He said, "There is no doubt that Korea will become independent from Japan," and was even prosecuted for treason by a Japanese colonial court because of these activities. The government of the Republic of Korea posthumously awarded each of them an Order of Merit for National Foundation.
