The Dark History of Dokdo Dokdo located in the East Sea has been a part of Korean history for a long time. But in 1905, Imperial Japan illegally occupied Dokdo, portending the forced annexation of the entire Korean Peninsula in 1910. Returned to its original sovereignty after WWII, Dokdo now stands as a symbol of independence and pride of the Korean people. Eulmi Incident (Assassination of Empress Myeongseong), extinction of the Dokdo Sea Lion (Gangchi), ‘Comfort Women’ (Military Sexual Slavery by Japan) and claiming Dokdo as a Japanese territory are all related to Imperial Japan and its war crimes.
